Thanks, Talal, that should work. I knew I was making the solution more difficult than it actually is...

Ok. So it isn't working.

It runs through in the debugging data in the yellow actions just fine, the session variable is assigned the message value. But in the text output it is always the blank value. The orange Ajax Actions debugging shows it as always the blank value, too, and never the message. So, I think this will not work because the actions are carried out once, saving the data and setting the message, then the actions are carried out again as the page is refreshed with ajax emptying the message. And that is where I ran into problems before. So, probably a redirect to a message page with a link back to the listing is probably the only way around it unless I add some kind of counter variable that will allow the message to stay in the session variable through two cycles and be emptied on the third? My head aches too much tonight to try anything further. I think I'll start with a separate message page tomorrow and forget staying on the same page.

Thanks again,
Rick

I tried using a counter to clear the message on the third pass and that worked. Starts at 0, if zero increment to 1, if 1 increment to 2, and anything else sets the sResults to nothing. When the record is saved it sets the sresults to the message and sets the counter to 0. Works perfectly. In the words of Monty Python... "and there was much rejoicing!"
