Listx Community

Plenty of work has been done on the next major release of NukeDK.ListX. We have been in the dark with information but working fulltime since August of 2007 with a team of engineers. We are currently in Alpha mode (internal use) with a BETA release anticipated in the next week or so. Depending on the BETA period an official public release is anticipated in February.

A few note worthy items:

-Listx/NukeDK name is being archived. The new name is Open Web Studio (OWS)

-OWS will be DNN agnostic. Meaning it will not only work in the DNN framework but also SharePoint and other .NET Framework web solutions. Configurations built in one platform will port to the other.

-OWS will be backward compatible with current ListX configurations/modules

-OWS Interface, Administration, Tagging, Classes have all been completely revamped

-New standard based Class naming conventions will be an optional use (no more Esc)

-Many new support related features:
- NukeDK.ListX footprint is reduced significantly
- Better use of technologies such as AJAX and JSON
- New actions
- Global level module administration
- Web site dedicated OWS and community support
- Samples, Videos by us as well as the community
- Dynamic WIKI based help

-OWS will be an OPEN SOURCE project. It will have three levels of users: Community, Core and Enterprise. Each will have full access to the source code and all development features (no strings attached). The Community level version will be completely free including source code. Core and Enterprise will be a subscription level based pay for support per user license (individual user seed).

We will be sharing much more information about the new features as well as the business model in the upcoming weeks.

I know OWS Beta is close, but I'm still curious about the potential use with SharePoint.

Will OWS install as a WebPart in Sharepoint?

Will it be aware of the fact that it is running within SP and as a result have access either to the environment? Perhaps even support SP specific actions like those for the User object in ListX?

emaynard - One of the first goals that was set forth when constructing OWS was to make it platform agnostic. We moved all DNN specific functionality into a separate library. My specific duty was the SharePoint wrapper. Currently, MOSS 2007 works great. Pretty much everything that can be done in DNN can be done in SP. Even better, if you're careful about your configurations, you can copy from one platform to the other and have exactly the same experience. Next, I'll be tackling the WSS 3.0 wrapper, but I think it's going to be roughly the same.

jepper - Progress is progressing :-) We're currently in an optimization phase and addressing some annoyances (from us and you the users) that were present in ListX. We've been using it internally for about 3 weeks now, and so far so good.

So, when is the release? All I can say for certain is it's the top priority around here and keeps us busy 27 hours a day (a typical work day for a developer). Our goal is to have this thing as bug free as possible upon first release - which is soon.

What is the upgrade path on the pending OWS release for new NukeDk/ListX users? I'm looking at purchasing NukeDK now but I will likely not get really in depth for a while. To save some headaches, should I wait until the Community, Core and Enterprise level subscriptions are setup for OWS?

It would be helpful to know if there is a planned upgrade path to Core/Enterprise OWS for current users.

The path for upgrading from ListX to OWS id direct, and can live side by side. When the OWS module is installed, the ListX settings page is altered to include an "Upgrade to Open Web Studio" link. Clicking this converts your module from ListX into Open Web Studio. We have been holding back on the release to verify that all aspects are fully compatible going forward, so an intense amount of testing has gone into making certain that this is the case.

Kevin thanks for the update. I think most of us are like kids waiting for Christmas and the new toy we are wanting to get. Can you give us some solid time table on when we can see OWS? I also have learned to live with the fact that from previous version updates that it usually took 4 to 6 weeks when you said next week, but OWS (ListX 2.0) was mentioned 6 months ago and this thread is 3 months old.

I understand the changes you are making to this module are going to be awesome but your kids are wanting to play with your new toy.

Keep up the good work and don't take this post as a gripe but as anticipation.

I have 3 kids myself and know very well the last month / day!

First - OWS is alive. We have been in a pre-Beta mode for the past month using it extensively on projects and working out issues/bugs and adding various new features we deem important.

OFFICIALLY releasing OWS to the BETA team next week. I anticipate a 3-4 week period for the BETA.

Yeah, it does feel a bit like the last month of my wife's pregnancy - except for the fact that in this case - I feel like I am the one giving birth! Thanks for being patient. We are very close and just want to make sure that all the bells and whistles are in place when beta starts so that there will be very little chance of issues during the beta period.

I checked my calendar this morning - it's Thursday! Hint Hint :-)
